Best for independent restaurants, boutique shopping, and real London life. Angel (officially Islington) is where the media class lives — which means excellent restaurants, good bookshops, and a slightly self-satisfied air that's entirely justified.

A narrow pedestrian passage lined with permanent antique shops and arcades, plus outdoor stalls on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Georgian silver, vintage maps, jewellery, art, ceramics — one of London's finest antiques destinations without the tourist mark-up of Portobello.
The original Ottolenghi deli where the whole modern London food movement arguably started. Extraordinary counter displays of roasted vegetables, salads, and pastries. Join the queue — it moves quickly and every single thing is worth it.
One of London's most consistently excellent restaurants — wood-fired North African and Spanish cooking that has barely changed its approach since 1997. The tasting menus are exceptional value by London standards; the bar at the front for tapas and sherry is one of the best value dining experiences in the city.
A traditional London street market that has operated continuously since 1880 — fresh produce, flowers, household goods, cheap hot food. Runs Tuesday to Sunday, busiest Thursday to Saturday. An antidote to the curated food markets that have colonised the rest of London.
One of London's most respected mid-sized theatres — consistently produces work that transfers to the West End and Broadway. Intimate 325-seat space where you're never more than ten rows from the stage. Exceptional programming, excellent pre-show bar.
The largest open space in the area — 29 acres of grassland, a lido (open summer), tennis courts, and playground. Far less visited than the central London parks but beloved by locals. The Sunday morning dog-walking crowd is a genuine Angel institution.
Wednesday morning for Camden Passage antiques. Thursday to Saturday evening for Upper Street restaurants at their best. Saturday morning for Chapel Market and Ottolenghi without the full weekend madness. Sunday afternoon is quiet and the park is full of locals.
Angel (Northern line) is the direct station — exit onto Upper Street and everything is within walking distance. For Camden Passage, exit and turn right immediately off Upper Street at Islington Green. Highbury & Islington (Victoria line, London Overground) is the alternative for the northern end of Upper Street and Highbury Fields.
