Neighbourhood Guide

Angel

Local
FoodNightlifeShopping

Best for independent restaurants, boutique shopping, and real London life. Angel (officially Islington) is where the media class lives — which means excellent restaurants, good bookshops, and a slightly self-satisfied air that's entirely justified.

Our Picks in Angel

Curated by our editorial team. Not paid. Not sponsored. Just places we think are worth your time.

Camden Passage Antiques Market

Market

A narrow pedestrian passage lined with permanent antique shops and arcades, plus outdoor stalls on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Georgian silver, vintage maps, jewellery, art, ceramics — one of London's finest antiques destinations without the tourist mark-up of Portobello.

💡 Wednesday and Saturday mornings (9am-4pm) are when the outdoor stalls are set up in addition to the permanent shops. Wednesday is quieter and dealers are more willing to talk.

Ottolenghi Upper Street

Deli / Café

The original Ottolenghi deli where the whole modern London food movement arguably started. Extraordinary counter displays of roasted vegetables, salads, and pastries. Join the queue — it moves quickly and every single thing is worth it.

💡 Come at 9am on a weekday and have coffee and pastries without the queue. The meringues are famous for good reason. Avoid weekend lunchtimes — it's rammed.

Moro

Restaurant

One of London's most consistently excellent restaurants — wood-fired North African and Spanish cooking that has barely changed its approach since 1997. The tasting menus are exceptional value by London standards; the bar at the front for tapas and sherry is one of the best value dining experiences in the city.

💡 The bar seats are first-come, first-served — no booking required. Arrive at 6pm on a weekday, order the anchovies and the wood-roast aubergine, and eat for under £25 a head.

Chapel Market

Market

A traditional London street market that has operated continuously since 1880 — fresh produce, flowers, household goods, cheap hot food. Runs Tuesday to Sunday, busiest Thursday to Saturday. An antidote to the curated food markets that have colonised the rest of London.

💡 Buy fruit and vegetables here instead of a supermarket if you're self-catering. The prices are significantly lower and the produce is better. The hot salt-beef rolls from the stall near the middle are the best lunch in the area for under £7.

Almeida Theatre

Theatre

One of London's most respected mid-sized theatres — consistently produces work that transfers to the West End and Broadway. Intimate 325-seat space where you're never more than ten rows from the stage. Exceptional programming, excellent pre-show bar.

💡 Day seats are often released at 10am on the day of the performance. Check the website — you can see major productions for £12-£18 with a bit of planning.

Highbury Fields

Park

The largest open space in the area — 29 acres of grassland, a lido (open summer), tennis courts, and playground. Far less visited than the central London parks but beloved by locals. The Sunday morning dog-walking crowd is a genuine Angel institution.

💡 The Highbury Fields Lido is one of London's outdoor pools — open May to September. Get there early on hot days; it fills up fast and turns away visitors once capacity is reached.
